Hot Weather

Training in Hot Weather
EARL SHILTON
Wednesday 12th August & Thursday 13th August 2026 Training will start at 6:30pm with Dragon Warriors and then at 7:30pm Adults, so there will be no Little Dragons and no 5:30pm class, this is to allow the temperature to reduce before students start training and also to look after the coaches so that they are able to run the best and safest classes possible.
COALVILLE
Coalville classes will run as normal timetable, this is for a few reasons; the dojo is a bit cooler and classes are already scheduled to start later than Earl Shilton.

When temperatures become very high, training can be more demanding on the body. The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) does not set a maximum temperature at which people must stop working or training, but it does provide guidance on managing heat stress and staying safe in hot conditions.

For more information, see the HSE guidance on heat stress:

https://www.hse.gov.uk/temperature/employer/heat-stress.htm

At the dojo, we want everyone to enjoy their training while remaining safe and healthy. Please follow the guidance below during periods of hot weather.

General Guidance

Consider Whether You Should Train

When temperatures exceed 30°C, please consider carefully whether training is appropriate for you.

  • If you struggle in hot weather, have a medical condition affected by heat, or have been advised by a healthcare professional not to exercise above a certain temperature, please take that advice seriously.

  • Parents should make this decision on behalf of younger children.

Humidity Matters

Temperature is not the only factor. High humidity makes it harder for sweat to evaporate, reducing the body's ability to cool itself effectively. Even if the temperature is lower, humid conditions can make training feel much more strenuous.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration is essential in all weather conditions, but especially during hot weather and exercise.

Please bring plenty of fluids to every class. Recently, several students arrived without drinks and some felt they did not need one. By the time you feel thirsty, your body may already be becoming dehydrated.

Clothing

During hot weather, the full martial arts uniform is not required.

  • Shorts and a T-shirt are acceptable.

  • Please continue to wear your belt so instructors can identify your grade and teach appropriately.

Training Adjustments

Coaches will modify classes where necessary.

  • Warm-ups may be shorter, as students will often arrive already warm.

  • More frequent drinks breaks may be included.

  • Training intensity may be reduced during extreme heat.

  • Students are encouraged to rest if they feel unwell.

Hot Weather Tips

1. Bring Plenty to Drink

Bring at least one drink, preferably two.

Water is ideal.

Diluted squash is also acceptable. Avoid excessive amounts of sugary or highly caffeinated drinks.

2. Consider an Isotonic Drink

For longer or more intense training sessions, a simple homemade isotonic drink can help replace fluids and electrolytes:

  • 500ml water

  • 2 tablespoons honey or sugar

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

  • A small pinch of salt (approximately 1g)

Mix thoroughly before drinking.

3. Wear Light Clothing

Lightweight clothing can help keep you cool and comfortable.

Remember to wear your belt.

4. Listen to Your Body

Stop training and speak to a Sensei immediately if you experience:

  • Dizziness

  • Nausea

  • Headache

  • Excessive fatigue

  • Confusion

  • Feeling faint

There is no benefit in "pushing through" symptoms of heat exhaustion.

Our Priority

Training should be enjoyable, challenging, and safe. If conditions are exceptionally hot, instructors may modify training or, in rare cases, cancel classes if they believe continuing would present an unacceptable health risk.

If in doubt, please speak to a Sensei before training.
